Hello Internet!

I’ve decided to add my voice to the internet. Will I just be screaming into the void? I don’t know… What I do know is that I was inspired by the book “What Color Is Your Parachute” by Richard N. Bolles. He makes the argument to start a professional blog to demonstrate your skills. He claims it can often be a game changing tool in your job-hunting toolkit.

My name is Grant, and “what do I know?” you’re probably asking? I know a little bit about personal finance that’s what. Believe me I had to think long and hard about what I can convey professionally. The subtle nuances of lofi music on YouTube, or how to doomscroll on the couch while the football game is on were my first two choices, but I thought there’s not a lot of run way on these topics. So, third time’s the charm, I’m plowing ahead with personal finance. Now I’m keeping the tone light, but I do consider myself a savvy operator when it comes to money, budgeting, investing. I’ve been on a huge journey with many mistakes and a few wins. After nearly a decade of figuring this stuff out, I feel like I could really add to the finance conversations more than the typical crunching numbers and doing whatever the numbers tell you. For one, I’ve figured out there are many steps in between a good return on investment number and actually doing the thing. I’ve rehabbed a house for an investment and it nearly killed me. I’ll explore that more on a later post. But in between seeing 17% ROI and a refinance on a mortgage, there’s about a million money tips and interactions that most personal finance heads gloss over.

So, this is it, I’ve given this blog thing a shot. I must say it has been already more daunting than I could ever Imagine. I thought that I’d bang out a few words and then post it to the internet. I fully believed the writing was going to be the hard part. NOPE! I spent an entire day trying to create a website to post this stuff to. That was the hard part. Web design is beyond my comprehension but at least I can say I have a bit of experience in it now. It’s not really my cup of tea. I’ll definitely pay someone next time I want to make a website. Hey! Look at that; I just inadvertently touched on a great blog idea. You must value your own time, and spending all day learning how to design a web page might not be worth your time. I’ll save that concept for a future post down the line.

I’m going to leave you with a small list of topics I have penned out for the next subjects. Oh, by the way, this won’t be strictly 100% about personal finance. I’ve read that good things come to those who write about what they are interested in so I’m going to sprinkle a few fun topics in. Sorry in advance if that isn’t your thing. Maybe you might learn something new and fun along the way.

  • Sinking Funds/Envelope method of saving
  • Dividends (real dollars vs fake numbers?)
  • HSAs otherwise known as Health Savings Accounts
  • Donating Plasma for a bit of cash
  • Real Estate investing
  • Plan for the week not the day
  • Dogs, of course you gotta talk about dogs
  • Art Bell’s Coast to Coast
  • English Soccer
  • Networking/Meetups

If you have made it this far God bless you. I’m not sure that anyone will ever read this, but that’s ok. I’m doing this for the creativity and the job hunting, and who knows maybe the promise of a bit of monetization down the line. I am the personal finance guy; it would be wrong of me not to be always looking for a side hustle. Thanks!
